Pegula, defending champion, eliminated at the Canadian Open

In a surprising day at the National Bank Open, American tennis player Jessica Pegula, double defending champion, was eliminated in the third round of the tournament. Pegula fell to Latvian Anastasija Sevastova with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Sevastova, who reached number 11 in the world in 2018, is currently ranked 386th. Sevastova managed to break Pegula’s serve, the third seed, on six out of ten occasions. This defeat adds to a negative streak for Pegula, who, despite winning her first match in Montreal against Maria Sakkari of Greece, had already been eliminated at Wimbledon and the D.C. Open in July.

Osaka advances to the next round

Naomi Osaka, for her part, secured her place in the fourth round after defeating Jelena Ostapenko with a score of 6-2, 6-4. The Japanese tennis player, former world number one, connected five aces and took advantage of six out of nine break opportunities to secure the victory in one hour and twelve minutes.In other results of the day, Clara Tauson of Denmark, seeded number 16, achieved a resounding victory in the third round over Yuliia Starodubtseva of Ukraine, with a score of 6-3, 6-0. Iga Swiatek, Wimbledon champion and second seed of the tournament, starred in the night session, facing Eva Lys of Germany in the third round.
