Santana Moss: From walk-on to Washington legend

Santana Moss, who began his career as a walk-on player at the University of Miami, will be honored for his outstanding career in professional American football. The organization announced that he will be inducted into Washington’s prestigious Ring of Fame, a recognition of his legacy as one of the most outstanding receivers in the team’s history. The tribute ceremony will take place during the Commanders’ season opener against the New York Giants on September 7. The news was communicated to Moss, who currently works for the team as a video and podcast analyst, during a practice on Sunday. Friends and family celebrated the news by wearing burgundy caps with his last name.

This announcement coincided with the return of Terry McLaurin, Washington’s star receiver, to training camp, after a four-day absence while negotiating a contract extension. Moss played 10 of his 14 NFL seasons with Washington, after being traded by the New York Jets in 2005. He currently ranks third in franchise history in receptions (581), fourth in receiving yards (7,867), and seventh in touchdowns (47). The Jets selected him in the first round of the 2001 draft. In his first season with Washington, Moss was selected for the Pro Bowl after catching 84 passes for a franchise-record 1,483 yards and nine touchdowns. That season, he won the affection of the Washington fans by making two touchdown receptions in the last four minutes, leading a comeback to win 14-13 against the Dallas Cowboys. Moss finished his 14-year career with 732 receptions for 10,283 yards and 66 touchdowns.
