Mexico City – Renowned goalkeeper Keylor Navas, after his time at Real Madrid, joins the ranks of Pumas UNAM, a Liga MX team, following a brief stint at Newell’s Old Boys of Argentina. Before making this decision, Navas sought advice from his former Real Madrid teammate, Sergio Ramos, and also consulted with the Costa Rica coach, Miguel Herrera.

I am here eager to give it my all, to push myself, and to be on the court playing at the highest level. I have the mentality to make history, to be able to win a title. I believe we can achieve those goals by working with humility.

The 38-year-old Costa Rican goalkeeper was presented on Thursday in an effort by Pumas to renew their squad and break a 14-year title drought. The agreement with Pumas is for one year, and Newell’s Old Boys will receive 2 million dollars as part of the transfer. Navas and Ramos shared a locker room at Real Madrid for five seasons, winning three Champions League titles. Subsequently, they reunited at Paris Saint-Germain, where they won Ligue 1 in 2022. Sergio Ramos, 39 years old, joined Monterrey at the beginning of this year.

Sergio told me a bit about his experience in Mexico. I know that James (Rodríguez) is also here and playing at a high level. The Liga MX is growing and is very competitive, with very good infrastructure, and I thought I would come to a club where we can compete for titles.

James Rodríguez, also a former teammate of Navas and Ramos at Real Madrid, currently plays in Mexico with León. Pumas had already incorporated Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey, Colombian left-back Álvaro Angulo, and Ecuadorian midfielder Pedro Vite. Navas also communicated with Miguel Herrera, who gave him his perspective on the league and the club. I spoke with Miguel because he knows the league and the club well, and he told me to sign without hesitation. I am joining a great club, and having him in the national team helps you make these decisions. Navas’ decision was also influenced by the proximity to his country, as Costa Rica will begin the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in September, in Group C along with Honduras, Haiti and Nicaragua.
