LeBron James debuts with a win: the 76ers spoil the Knicks’ ring night
In an emotional NBA opening day, the Philadelphia 76ers surprised the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden by winning 106-100. The game had a special tone, as the New Yorkers were celebrating their first championship in 53 years, receiving their rings and raising the championship banner in front of their fans.
The big attraction of the night was LeBron James’ official debut in a Philadelphia uniform. In his 24th season in the league, the 41-year-old veteran recorded 14 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, focusing on his role as a playmaker for his new teammates.
The prominence of leaders on the court
The Sixers’ offense was led by Tyrese Maxey, who added 28 points, supported by Jaylen Brown’s 19 points. For his part, Joel Embiid contributed a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. On the Knicks’ side, Jalen Brunson led the charge with 21 units, while the Dominican Karl-Anthony Towns recorded 19 points and 12 rebounds in an effort that proved insufficient against the visitors’ solidity.
I like the way we played. I think we played exceptionally well, especially defensively. I’m still getting into a rhythm; I’ve only been with the new team for a little over two weeks.

Although the Knicks dominated the first half with double-digit leads, Philadelphia’s energy shifted after the break. A three-pointer by Jaylen Brown at the buzzer of the third quarter boosted the Sixers, who managed to control the pace in the final stretch. The visitors’ defense was key, limiting the defending champions to 37% shooting from the field and just 33% from the three-point line.
Surprise in Detroit
The opening day also saw a surprise in Boston, where the Detroit Pistons overcame a 22-point deficit to beat the Celtics 121-113. The Detroit team achieved an impressive 23-0 run in the fourth quarter, led by Cade Cunningham (22 points) and Duncan Robinson (21 points).
Despite Paul George’s 38 points in his debut with Boston, the inefficiency of Jayson Tatum, who made only 6 of his 23 attempts, ended up weighing on the final result for the Celtics.
