Lula da Silva exercises his right to vote and remains optimistic about the election results

The former Brazilian president and candidate for reelection, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, went to the polls this Sunday in São Bernardo do Campo, located on the outskirts of São Paulo, expressing notable confidence in achieving victory in these general elections. The leader of the Workers’ Party arrived at the João Firmino Correia de Araújo educational center around 9:15 local time, where he was greeted by a crowd of supporters who had been awaiting his presence since early in the morning.

At the end of his participation, Lula highlighted to the media the work carried out both during his time in government and throughout the electoral campaign. “I am very confident, not only because of the government we had, but also because of the work we did during the campaign. I am sure that we will have a very high turnout and I am sure that we are going to win these elections,” the candidate declared.

It is 500 years of backwardness. You don’t solve 500 years in 10, 15 or 20 years. We need a lot of time to fix this country.

Election day details

The candidate, who was accompanied by his wife Rosângela ‘Janja’ Lula da Silva, appeared wearing a white shirt and his characteristic Panama hat. During his time at the polling station, he was surrounded by key figures from his coalition, including his running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, as well as Fernando Haddad, Marina Silva, and Simone Tebet.

The electoral race remains extremely tight. His main opponent, the current president Jair Bolsonaro, cast his vote shortly after the polls opened in Rio de Janeiro. Pre-election polls reflected a scenario of a technical tie, which adds high anticipation to the closing of the polling stations.
