Chris Sale reaches 200 strikeouts and reaffirms his MLB legacy

In a masterful performance that cements his status as one of the most dominant pitchers of his generation, Chris Sale reached the 200-strikeout mark in a season for the ninth time in his career. This milestone was key in the Atlanta Braves’ 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

The left-hander needed to retire 10 batters via strikeout in his last outing of the regular season to secure the record. The historic moment came in the sixth inning, when he managed to fan Sal Stewart with a called third strike, unleashing euphoria on the mound.

An exclusive club of legends

With this achievement, Sale places himself on a pedestal reserved for few arms in the history of baseball. By adding nine seasons with at least 200 strikeouts, he tied Randy Johnson as the only left-handed pitchers to achieve this feat on nine or more occasions.

  • Nolan Ryan: 15 seasons with 200+ strikeouts
  • Randy Johnson: 13 seasons with 200+ strikeouts
  • Roger Clemens: 12 seasons with 200+ strikeouts
  • Tom Seaver: 10 seasons with 200+ strikeouts
  • Chris Sale: 9 seasons with 200+ strikeouts

In addition to his ability to strike out rivals, Sale finished the campaign with an impressive 2.16 ERA. This figure places him in a select group of Braves pitchers, alongside figures of the stature of Greg Maddux, Warren Spahn, and the Dominican Reynaldo López, who have managed to maintain a similar earned run average in at least 25 starts.

Sale’s ability to maintain his power and speed at 37 years old is a testament to his work ethic and his ability to overcome the physical challenges he faced in the past.

Intact power and focus in October

Beyond the statistics, the veteran proved that his arm remains elite. In his last outing, his four-seam fastball averaged 97.8 miles per hour, even reaching 99.5 mph on four of his pitches, a clear sign that his strength remains intact.

With the regular season now in the books, the star pitcher’s sights are set on the most important challenge of the year: the postseason. Sale has been confirmed to start the first game of the National League Wild Card Series against the San Diego Padres, where the Braves will look to rely on his arm to advance on the road to the title.
