Dominican Republic highlights educational progress before UNESCO
Within the framework of his visit to the United Nations headquarters in New York, President Luis Abinader held a key bilateral meeting with Khaled El-Enany, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). During the meeting, they analyzed the significant progress experienced by the Dominican educational system, which has been validated by the 2026 Global Education Monitoring Report.
Towards a STEM innovation center in Punta Bergantín
One of the central points of the dialogue was the proposal to establish an institute specialized in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education within the Punta Bergantín Innovation Center. This initiative seeks to replicate the successful model that UNESCO currently implements in Shanghai, with the goal of strengthening the strategic training of Dominican youth.
The implementation of this institute represents a vital opportunity to integrate the Dominican Republic into global standards of innovation, science, and technological development, preparing our youth for the challenges of the future.

Figures that demonstrate national progress
The UNESCO report highlights that the country has shown consistent improvement between 2015 and 2024 in key indicators of access and completion of studies:
- Primary education: The completion rate rose from 90% to 96%.
- Lower secondary: The completion rate grew from 83% to 89%.
- Upper secondary: An increase from 56% to 64% was recorded, surpassing various nations in the Latin American region.
Despite these achievements, the government’s commitment remains focused on reducing exclusion and closing existing educational gaps. President Abinader was supported in this mission by Minister Víctor -Ito- Bisonó and Ambassador Wellington Bencosme, permanent representative to the UN.
