Canadian citizen arrested with 15 kilos of alleged drugs in Punta Cana

In a recent operation carried out at Punta Cana International Airport, Dominican authorities managed to arrest a 21-year-old Canadian national. The individual was intercepted while attempting to board a flight bound for London, United Kingdom, carrying an illicit shipment.

The intervention was carried out by agents of the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), who were supported by the Specialized Airport Security Corps (Cesac). The discovery was made during routine baggage inspection protocols at the air terminal.

Details of the anti-narcotics operation

The official report indicates that, upon passing the foreigner’s suitcase through the X-ray scanners, security personnel detected anomalies in the images. Given this situation, an exhaustive manual inspection was carried out, managing to locate 14 packages wrapped in plastic.

  • Quantity seized: 14 packages.
  • Approximate weight: 15 kilograms.
  • Flight destination: London, United Kingdom.

The seized substance has been sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) to determine its exact composition and final weight through laboratory analysis, following chain of custody protocols.

Judicial process and ongoing investigations

The detainee will be placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the coming hours, facing charges for the alleged violation of Law 50-88 on Drugs and Controlled Substances. Meanwhile, the authorities are keeping a deep investigation open to dismantle possible international drug trafficking networks that use foreign citizens as “mules” for the transport of narcotics to Europe and the United States.

The DNCD reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict controls at all airports in the country, with the goal of neutralizing the operations of criminal groups that intend to use Dominican territory as a transit point for their illicit activities.
