Health alert in The Bronx: Legionella detected in cooling towers including Yankee Stadium
New York health authorities are immersed in an exhaustive investigation following the detection of the Legionella bacteria in ten cooling towers located in The Bronx, specifically in the Melrose and Morrisania areas. Among the structures analyzed, one of them is located at Yankee Stadium, which has generated public attention regarding this outbreak that has already accounted for nine affected people and one death.
It is important to clarify that the presence of the bacteria’s genetic material in the sports facility’s premises does not confirm that the stadium is the source of the infections. According to Alofoke Deportes authorities, fans and visitors are not at additional risk simply by entering the venue, as preliminary PCR tests detect the presence of the bacteria but do not confirm whether it is active or if it is directly responsible for the community outbreak.
Preventive measures and status of the investigation
The Department of Health has immediately ordered the emptying, cleaning, and preventive disinfection of the ten identified towers. Of the nine cases confirmed to date, three patients remain under hospital observation, four have been discharged, and one did not require hospitalization. Efforts are now focused on determining which, if any, of the analyzed facilities was the source of exposure.

Authorities recommend that anyone who has been in the affected areas since late August and presents these signs should seek immediate medical attention.
Groups at higher risk of developing serious complications include:
- People over 50 years of age.
- Individuals with a history of smoking or vaping.
- Patients suffering from chronic diseases.
- People with weakened immune systems.
