Justice seeks the scammer behind the tragedy in Los Praditos

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has intensified its efforts to locate Joan Manuel Jiménez Medina, identified as the mastermind behind a complex virtual scam that led to the death of young Emmanuel Contreras Medina. This case, which has shocked the Los Praditos sector, highlights the dangers of unverified transactions on digital platforms.

The modus operandi: a triangulation trap

According to the file presented by prosecutor Vladimir Viloria, the defendant used a triangulation scheme through Facebook Marketplace. The scammer located a real offer from Lenin Jhericop Núñez de León, who was selling an iPhone 15 Pro Max for 35,000 pesos. After gaining the seller’s trust, Jiménez Medina duplicated the item’s information and offered it to the victim, Emmanuel Contreras, for a hook price of 15,000 pesos.

  • The scammer convinced Contreras to make an immediate transfer to his personal accounts.
  • He coordinated a meeting between both at the La Javilla baseball stadium, manipulating the information each party received.
  • He assured the seller that the payment would be made in person, while he told the victim that the equipment was already paid for and they only needed to pick it up.

The fatal outcome

The meeting on July 1, 2026, became a scene of absolute confusion. Upon not receiving the agreed-upon payment, Núñez de León assumed he was being the victim of an assault and chased Contreras, attacking him with a bat. The victim passed away months later, on September 9, due to the blunt force injuries received to his head.

Psychological manipulation and technological deception were the triggers that pitted two citizens who did not know each other against one another, under false premises imposed by a third party.
