Belgian citizen linked to drug trafficking and violent acts captured in Cartagena
In a strategic operation deployed in Cartagena, Colombian authorities managed to capture the Belgian citizen Alec Louis Leonora Van Regenmortel. The subject, who was actively sought through an Interpol red notice, faces serious charges for his alleged participation in drug trafficking networks and crimes of extreme violence.
The operation was coordinated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Interpol (Dijín) of the National Police, with the fundamental support of Migration Colombia. This intervention responds to the strengthening of international cooperation mechanisms to combat transnational crime.
Details of illicit activities
According to official information, the detainee is identified as a key figure in a structure dedicated to the trafficking of illicit substances between 2020 and 2024. His activities included the large-scale commercialization and distribution of:
- Cocaine
- Ecstasy (MDMA)
- Cannabis
In addition to his ties to drug trafficking, Van Regenmortel is being investigated for a violent attack that occurred in Antwerp, Belgium, in February 2021, where he allegedly assaulted a person with a bladed weapon before subsequently shooting them in their lower extremities.
Extradition process
The criminal record of the Belgian citizen includes incidents where firearms, ammunition, and electroshock devices have been seized from him, items he used to hide in secret vehicle compartments. His location within Colombian territory was made possible thanks to strict monitoring of immigration controls and the exchange of data with international agencies.
Currently, the detainee is in the custody of the International Affairs Directorate of the Attorney General’s Office, the entity in charge of managing the necessary legal procedures for his extradition to Belgium.
In light of this result, the Colombian Ministry of Defense emphasized that the national territory will not serve as a refuge for criminals wanted by international justice, reaffirming the country’s commitment to global security.
