Social commitment: President of Colombia donates his presidential salary to charitable causes
The President of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, has begun to materialize one of the fundamental pillars of his electoral platform: renouncing his salary as head of state to allocate those resources to vulnerable sectors of the country. The president reaffirmed that his administration will be marked by social responsibility and direct support to the communities that need it most.
The first installment of this monthly assignment took place in the municipality of Quimbaya, Quindío. During this visit, the president benefited two institutions dedicated to the care of the elderly: the Santo Domingo Savio and Consentidos de Jesús homes. With this action, De la Espriella seeks to highlight the importance of providing a dignified old age to those who contributed to the nation’s development.

Keeping a campaign promise
During his tour, the president recalled that his decision not to receive the presidential salary was a sacred promise made to the electorate. According to the details shared on his social media, one of the centers visited received a contribution of 15,979,307 Colombian pesos, as part of the strategy to transform lives at a regional level.
The presidential initiative will be structured as follows:
- Monthly visits to different regions of the national territory.
- Personal delivery of the presidential salary to organizations, foundations, or social projects.
- Focus on causes that generate a direct impact on the quality of life of citizens.
It is important to remember that, during the campaign period, the current president was emphatic in declaring that he did not intend to benefit financially from the public office. The monthly remuneration stipulated for the Presidency of Colombia amounts to approximately 52 million Colombian pesos, funds that will now be redirected entirely to humanitarian efforts.
To date, the administration has not disclosed which region will be the next to receive this benefit nor the specific selection criteria for future organizations, thus maintaining anticipation regarding the national scope of this donation program.
