Eddy Alcántara announces the end of his tenure at the head of Pro Consumidor
The executive director of the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor), Eddy Alcántara, has stated that his time leading the institution is nearing its end. After heading the agency since March 2021, the official believes he has successfully achieved the goals set during his tenure.
Although Alcántara clarified that he has not submitted his formal resignation and will continue to fulfill his responsibilities, he stressed that his vision for work at the entity has been completed, exceeding the initial expectations placed in his administration.
A mandate under the legal framework
In accordance with Law 358-05, the position of executive director has a duration of two years, allowing for up to two consecutive confirmations for a maximum of six years. After being initially appointed by President Luis Abinader in 2021, Alcántara has been ratified on several occasions, extending his current legal term until March 18, 2027.

Achievements and balance of his management
During the celebration of Pro Consumidor’s 18th anniversary, Alcántara highlighted the milestones achieved under his leadership, which he categorized as his final commemoration at the head of the entity. Among the most significant results for consumer protection in the country, he highlighted:
- The return of more than RD$3.5 billion in favor of consumers over the last five years.
- The implementation of forceful measures against the trade of adulterated alcohol.
- The frontal combat against misleading advertising and the simulation of offers in the national market.
Regarding his political and professional future, the official reiterated his willingness to collaborate with the government of Luis Abinader, whether from a new public position or from the private sector, always under the president’s guidance.
Alcántara concluded by reaffirming that, regardless of his future position, he will maintain his commitment to the defense of citizens’ rights and the strengthening of state institutions, highlighting that his work at the head of Pro Consumidor has been fulfilled to the fullest.
