Tragedy in Idlib: Explosion at ammunition depot leaves deadly toll
A strong explosion shook northwestern Syria this Wednesday, specifically at an ammunition depot located in the vicinity of the town of Sarmada, in the northern rural area of Idlib. The event has left a preliminary toll of four people dead and more than a dozen injured, according to official reports.
The Idlib Media Directorate confirmed the incident through a statement, detailing that the affected facilities were used as a collection center for the temporary storage of weaponry and remnants of war, which were awaiting transfer for subsequent management.
Emergency work and victim support
Subhi Assaf, director of the press office of the region’s Health Directorate, reported that the injured individuals, among whom are members of the Ministry of Defense staff, have mild to moderate clinical conditions, and were therefore taken to medical centers to receive specialized care.
Emergency teams and Civil Defense units are working hard in the area to control the fires resulting from the blast, secure the perimeter, and mitigate any risk of secondary explosions.

This incident occurs within the framework of the recent efforts undertaken by the new Syrian Government, following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Since then, the authorities have prioritized a national campaign aimed at the location, collection, and disposal of munitions and remnants of war, as well as the dismantling of facilities that housed undeclared chemical substances or unsupervised weaponry.
Local authorities are keeping investigations open to determine the exact causes that triggered the detonation at the warehouse, while data from the official casualty count is being processed.
