Justice for Albert: 18 months of pretrial detention ordered for those involved in tragic event
The case that has shocked Dominican society, regarding the death of the young Albert de Jesús Aracena Núñez, has set an important judicial precedent. After an intense investigation, the authorities have ordered 18 months of preventive detention against the owners of the establishment “La Piscina New York,” Iván Arias Espinosa and Yosilda Báez Espinosa (Yossi), identified as the main individuals responsible for this crime that has sparked deep collective outrage.
Social outrage does not only respond to the loss of a life, but to the extreme vulnerability of the victim. Albert, who had delicate health conditions, was the subject of an act of violence that many describe as a cowardly abuse. His state of helplessness makes the event perceived as a moral aggravating factor in the eyes of the citizenry.
This case has generated so much social outrage not only because of the physical disappearance of Albert, but the condition of vulnerability that aggravates the crime. The file presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office details a series of calculated actions by the defendants to conceal the homicide. According to the investigations, the crime occurred on the night of August 4th. Following the event, the accused set in motion a systematic plan to evade justice:
- Simulation of a drowning in the premises’ pool.
- Concealment of the body in a freezer using lime.
- Dismantling of the victim’s motorcycle.
- Burial of the remains in a clandestine grave.
- Tampering with evidence, including the deletion of security recordings.
What has exhausted society’s patience is the level of cynicism shown by those involved, who, while the body remained hidden, pretended to collaborate with Albert’s family and offered statements to the press denying any link to his disappearance.
Key testimonies and judicial decision
The dismantling of the Arias Espinosa brothers’ alibi was made possible thanks to the statements of employees of the establishment, Anadelia García Crisóstomo and Germani Correa Crisóstomo, whose testimonies regarding the unusual movements at the premises were decisive for the authorities.
Given the severity of the charges—which include aggravated homicide, concealment of a corpse, and obstruction of justice—the court declared the case complex. Iván Arias Espinosa will serve his measure at the La Isleta Rehabilitation Center in Moca, while Yosilda Báez Espinosa was transferred to the women’s rehabilitation center in Salcedo.
