Educational normality: More than 98% of schools are operating without setbacks in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican public education system maintains a solid operational pace following the start of the 2026-2027 school year. According to official data provided by the School Infrastructure Directorate (DIE), the vast majority of the country’s educational facilities are operating normally, reaching an operational percentage of over 98% throughout the national territory.
The institution clarified that less than 2% of the 7,960 centers that make up the public network are under some intervention or renovation scheme. In these specific cases, the Ministry of Education has implemented measures to ensure the continuity of learning, allowing teaching to take place in person or combined with virtuality, depending on the safety conditions of each structure.
Management of renovations and school calendar
To minimize the impact on the academic calendar, the DIE has intensified its efforts through extended working hours. Maintenance and improvement work is carried out, to a large extent, during night hours and weekends, thus ensuring that construction work does not interfere with students’ class hours.
- Nearly 114 centers operate under a combined scheme (in-person and virtual) to provide pedagogical continuity.
- The goal is to conclude the pending interventions between the months of September and October.
- Differentiated safety protocols are applied according to the scope of each project.
When interventions are concentrated in delimited areas and safety conditions exist, renovation work and teaching can take place simultaneously. In cases where this is not possible, temporary solutions are implemented while the work is completed.

Commitment to the educational community
From the DIE, it was emphasized that the existence of an intervention in a school should not be interpreted as a suspension of teaching. The authorities have carried out a detailed technical survey of 214 centers to prioritize care. The main objective is to ensure that, by the end of October, all intervened schools are completely rehabilitated, allowing for a full return to in-person classes in centers that currently maintain mixed modalities.
