George Clooney lashes out at the Trump administration during the Venice Film Festival
Renowned American actor George Clooney has used the stage of the Venice Film Festival to launch a scathing critique against the Donald Trump administration. During his stay at the event, where he was awarded the honorary Golden Lion for his outstanding career, the 65-year-old performer did not hide his concern regarding the current political climate in his country.
Clooney defined the current government administration as a “kakistocracy,” a technical term that describes a political system led by the least capable or qualified people to exercise power. Despite the harshness of his words, the actor maintained a message of hope, comparing the current situation to turbulent historical periods, such as the tumultuous year of 1968 in the United States.

Defense of freedom of expression and journalism
During the press conference, the star of Ocean’s Eleven focused on the vulnerability of sectors that question power. According to Clooney, authoritarian regimes have as their main objective to silence those who demand transparency:
- Journalists who ask uncomfortable questions are the first to suffer reprisals.
- Artists who reject simplistic answers and seek to foster empathy also find themselves in the crosshairs.
- Stories told by creators are perceived as a threat to those leaders who base their strategy on fear.
Likewise, the actor condemned the normalization of cruelty in public discourse, questioning specific attitudes of figures linked to the military and political establishment who, in his view, degrade institutional respect.
Optimism in the face of future challenges
Although Clooney admits to feeling embarrassed by the current political landscape, he maintains an optimistic stance regarding the future. The actor sees the upcoming midterm elections as a key opportunity to establish a necessary counterweight and prepare the ground for a definitive change of course in the 2028 presidential election.
Finally, the filmmaker extended his criticisms toward the management of the climate crisis. Recalling his personal experience, when he had to be evacuated from his residence in France due to forest fires, Clooney lamented that figures in positions of power continue to label climate change as a hoax, ignoring scientific evidence. “That won’t last forever,” the award-winning actor declared, reaffirming his commitment to the causes he considers vital for the global future.
