Tadej Pogacar abandons the Vuelta a España after a serious crash

The cycling world is in shock following the withdrawal of Tadej Pogacar in the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España. The Slovenian cyclist, who was leading the general classification in the red jersey, suffered a serious accident 32 kilometers from the finish line that forced him to retire from the competition, marking an unprecedented event in his professional career.

The official medical report, issued by Dr. Adrian Rotunno, medical director of UAE Team Emirates, confirmed that the rider has a displaced fracture of the left clavicle, a stable cervical injury to the C7 vertebra, and a concussion, in addition to multiple abrasions. Although he is stable and without serious neurological sequelae, he will have to undergo surgery, which has been postponed as a precautionary measure due to the blow to his head.

A drastic change in the general classification

The premature exit of Pogacar, who was shaping up to be the great favorite to conquer the Spanish tour and seek the triple crown of the grand tours, has completely reconfigured the landscape of the race. The Spaniard Enric Mas is now the new leader of the general classification.

It’s a shame about Pogacar’s crash. I hope he recovers quickly.

Bryan Coquard prevails in a bittersweet stage

Beyond the incident with the leader, the eighth stage, which covered 171 kilometers between Puçol and Xeraco, was decided in an exciting sprint. The Frenchman Bryan Coquard, from the Cofidis team, took the victory after crossing the finish line in 3 hours, 47 minutes and 6 seconds.

The stage podium was completed by Mads Pedersen, who took second place, and Jordi Meeus, who finished in third position. As the competition continues its course, the fans and the international peloton remain waiting for positive news regarding the recovery of Pogacar, one of the greatest figures in the sport today.
