Agriculture and commerce join forces to strengthen supply in the DR

Minister of Agriculture advocates for a strategic alliance between producers and merchants to boost the agricultural sector

The Minister of Agriculture, Francisco Oliverio Espaillat Bencosme, emphasized the need to consolidate an operational synergy between the productive sector and Dominican commerce. The main objective is to build a more efficient, modern, and competitive agri-food chain that guarantees a constant supply of food throughout the national territory.

These statements were offered during the commemoration of the twelfth anniversary of the Confederation of Provision Trade and SMEs of the Dominican Republic (Confecomercio). Within the framework of the event, the entity presented a plaque of recognition to the official for his outstanding management at the head of the agricultural sector.

Unity for national development

Espaillat Bencosme stressed that agriculture and commerce must operate under a shared vision, as they are inseparable links in the same value chain. According to the minister, when the producer increases their efficiency levels, the positive impact translates throughout the entire logistical and commercial structure.

When a producer is more efficient, the entire chain is strengthened. It strengthens those who produce, those who transport, and those who market, and ultimately, Dominican commerce and consumers benefit.

The official highlighted the vital role that corner stores, supermarkets, and small and medium-sized enterprises play not only in the distribution of products, but also as pillars in job creation and the economic development of local communities.

Technification and efficiency: the path to the future

The Ministry of Agriculture is promoting a comprehensive transformation of the Dominican countryside, supported by fundamental pillars such as:

• Implementation of new agricultural technologies.
• Advanced mechanization of production processes.
• Technical training to increase profitability.
• Optimization of efficiency at every stage of cultivation.

The minister clarified that mechanization goes beyond the simple acquisition of equipment; it is a cultural and operational transformation that allows for cost reduction, mitigating labor shortages, and decreasing post-harvest losses. This approach is key to ensuring a robust and sustainable supply for Dominican families.

Lifetime achievement recognition

Upon receiving the distinction from Confecomercio, Espaillat Bencosme reaffirmed his commitment to the sector. For his part, the president of the confederation, Gilberto Luna, praised the minister’s career as a rice producer and his management capacity, highlighting his significant contributions to the modernization of national agriculture. The official concluded by reiterating that the success of the countryside is, ultimately, the success of the Dominican economy.
