The New York Police Department (NYPD) has implemented a strict security protocol for the 2026 edition of the US Open, integrating for the first time advanced drone detection and neutralization systems. This technology will allow authorities to identify and block unmanned aircraft attempting to fly without permission over the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Queens.
Until now, airspace management at large-scale events relied mostly on federal agencies. However, relying on the Safer Skies Act, the New York police department has assumed new powers to intervene directly in aerial incursions, using specialized equipment capable of interfering with drone electronic signals to divert their trajectory or neutralize them in restricted zones.
An unprecedented tactical deployment
Beyond aerial surveillance, the operation includes a robust ground security scheme. Hundreds of agents, including counter-terrorism units, bomb squads, mounted patrols, and intelligence personnel, will be part of the logistics that will cover not only the sports complex, but also nearby subway stations and critical access points.

The operation is complemented by a temporary federal restriction on the airspace of the tennis complex. This measure is essential to ensure that police personnel can act quickly against any aircraft that violates security. In parallel, the US Open’s internal regulations maintain an absolute prohibition on bringing drones or remote controls into the facilities, a rule designed to protect both the athletes and the attending public.
