FIFA imposes severe sanctions on Argentina and Spain after the 2026 World Cup final
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has issued a package of exemplary sanctions following the incidents recorded in the 2026 World Cup final, where the Spanish national team took the title after defeating Argentina 1-0 in a match marked by tension both on and off the pitch.
Individual penalties and suspensions
The world football governing body has been relentless with the protagonists of the altercations. Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes has received the most severe sanction, being disqualified from playing in the next 10 international matches. Meanwhile, his teammate Nahuel Molina will have to serve a seven-match suspension.
The coaching staff and other players were also affected by the disciplinary measures:
- Roberto Ayala: 3 match suspension.
- Thiago Almada: 1 match suspension.
- Gavi (Spain): 1 match suspension.
Economic impact and restrictions for the AFA
Beyond the player suspensions, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) will have to face a significant financial fine of 321,000 dollars. This penalty is in response to the violation of various articles of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, stemming from inappropriate behaviors observed throughout several matches of the tournament held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
FIFA has determined that Argentina’s next two home matches must be played with a 50% restriction of their total spectator capacity, as an additional corrective measure for the events that occurred after the final whistle of the championship match.
