Guardians Place Gabriel Arias on Injured List

CHICAGO – The Cleveland Guardians have placed shortstop Gabriel Arias on the 10-day injured list due to a left ankle sprain, ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs. In his place, infielder Brayan Rocchio was called up from Triple-A Columbus. Rocchio was included in Cleveland’s lineup at shortstop, batting ninth for the start of the series at Wrigley Field. Arias had to be carted off the field after getting injured in the third inning of Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The team reported that X-rays were negative and Arias underwent an MRI on Monday.

It seems we were quite lucky. It looks like a moderate ankle sprain. We will have more information about him when we return to Cleveland on Friday, but it seems he avoided a major injury, which is great.

Arias is batting .231 with six home runs and 31 RBIs in 77 games in his first full season as a starter. Arias extended to field a ground ball from Masyn Winn with one out, but caught his left shoe on the grass and twisted his ankle awkwardly. The ball ended up in left field for a single. Arias immediately grabbed his leg and remained on the ground for several minutes. Rocchio began the season with the Guardians, but was sent to Triple-A on May 12 after batting only .165 with eight RBIs in 35 games. In 41 games with Columbus, he batted .252 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs.
