Venezuela promotes plan to strengthen gas supply and improve the electrical system
The Government of Venezuela has launched a comprehensive strategy aimed at increasing the supply of methane gas in the domestic market. With this initiative, the authorities seek to optimize electricity generation and, at the same time, strengthen the supply in the country’s industrial, commercial, and residential sectors.
Jannier Viloria, Vice President of Gas at the state-owned company Pdvsa, detailed that the main objective is to reach a distribution of 2 billion cubic feet of gas by the end of December. According to the official, the supply is guaranteed and a significant portion of this increase will be channeled directly to thermoelectric plants to stabilize the national power generation capacity.
Actions against the energy crisis
This plan emerges in a context marked by constant interruptions in electrical service, which affect the interior regions of Venezuela with greater intensity. While the Executive branch points out that the failures are the product of external sanctions and alleged acts of sabotage, various specialists and opposition sectors maintain that the crisis is a direct consequence of the deterioration of the electrical infrastructure and the lack of preventive maintenance.
Reactivation of the Tocoma hydroelectric plant
As a complement to the measures regarding gas, the Venezuelan State has formalized an agreement with the company Impsa to reactivate the works of the Tocoma hydroelectric plant, located in Bolívar state. Authorities project that, once this project is completed, it will be possible to incorporate 2,640 megawatts into the National Electric System through the commissioning of ten generating units.
The completion of the Tocoma power plant is a key piece to strengthen the country’s electricity generation capacity, a project that began in 2007 and now seeks to be concluded after years of stagnation.
It is worth remembering that the construction of Tocoma, initiated under the mandate of former President Hugo Chávez, reached progress of over 87% before being halted for several years, according to reports from various independent organizations.
