Google announces Americas Connect: A technological leap for regional connectivity

The tech giant Google has made official the launch of “Americas Connect”, an ambitious digital infrastructure project designed to transform connectivity on the continent. This initiative contemplates the implementation of three new strategic submarine cables that will strengthen the links between Latin America, the Caribbean region, the United States, and Europe.

The submarine cable network: Alisios, Canoa and OlaLuz

The new network architecture is based on three main pillars, with the Dominican Republic consolidating itself as a central interconnection node:

  • Alisios: This cable will strategically connect Panama, Chile, and the Dominican Republic, forming part of a ring that integrates routes to the United States.
  • Canoa: With a name that pays homage to the Taíno heritage, this link will connect the Dominican Republic with Bermuda, facilitating the connection to Europe via Madrid.
  • OlaLuz: This project will establish a direct route between the Dominican Republic and the state of Florida, optimizing the flow of data to the southern United States.

Strengthening existing infrastructure

In addition to the new deployments, Google has confirmed that the “Firmina” submarine cable will have an extended branch to the Dominican Republic. This move seeks to maximize the reach of the infrastructure connecting North America with the Southern Cone. Likewise, the “Curie”, “Nuvem”, and “Sol” cables will be integrated to create redundant network rings, ensuring greater stability and speed in information transmission.

Americas Connect substantially improves the reach, reliability, and resilience of digital connectivity, offering diversified routes that connect geographically separate Google Cloud regions.

Impact on global connectivity

In the Pacific Ocean, the creation of an underwater ring will allow connecting Chile with Panama and, subsequently, with the west coast of the United States, directly benefiting the Google Cloud regions in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Chile. On the other hand, the convergence of the cables in the Caribbean will allow data centers in South Carolina and Virginia to operate with reduced latency and greater efficiency, consolidating the region as a strategic point in the global internet network.
