Ketel Marte and Willson Contreras, MLB Players of the Week
Santo Domingo – Major League Baseball recognized two outstanding Latino players this Monday: Dominican Ketel Marte and Venezuelan Willson Contreras, who shined with their bats during the week. Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks was awarded in the National League for his impressive offensive performance, key to the team’s good moment. Marte batted .536 between May 18 and 24, with an OPS of 1.563, accumulating seven extra-base hits and 12 RBIs in seven games. The three-time All-Star was instrumental in the Diamondbacks posting a 6-1 record during that period, including a game-winning home run against the San Francisco Giants. After a season start with an OPS of .619 in his first 41 games, Marte demonstrated his ability to react, regaining the offensive level that has made him a key figure for Arizona. In the American League, Willson Contreras, of the Boston Red Sox, was recognized for his outstanding performance. The Venezuelan first baseman batted .458 in six games, with an OPS of 1.355, four extra-base hits, and eight RBIs. Contreras has established himself as one of the Red Sox’s main offensive figures this season, maintaining one of the best OPS+ in the league.This is the second weekly award for Marte, who had already obtained it in September 2019. Contreras also adds his second recognition, after winning the first in 2017 playing for the Chicago Cubs.
Additionally, Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner was awarded Play of the Week for a spectacular defensive play. Hoerner made a clean, one-touch catch of the ball and completed the out with a throw between his legs to first base, a play that quickly went viral.
