Estrellas Orientales seek to retain Robinson Canó for next season

San Pedro de Macorís – Albert Pujols, president of baseball operations for the Estrellas Orientales, has confirmed the team’s strong interest in once again having Robinson Canó for the upcoming season of the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM). To this end, a salary offer has been presented to the experienced player. Canó, after finishing the past season, became a free agent, according to the current labor agreement between LIDOM and the National Federation of Professional Baseball Players. The infielder had signed with the Estrellas before the 2023-2024 season, an agreement that granted the team reserve rights over his services for two seasons. Subsequently, the link was extended for a third season through options exercised by both parties. With the last campaign concluded, Canó was once again free of contract. Pujols informed that the Estrellas made a new economic proposal to the player, although they have not yet received an official response or a counteroffer. In recent days, there has been speculation that Canó has reached an agreement to play with the Tomateros de Culiacán in the Mexican winter league, a viable option after the exclusive negotiation period with Dominican teams expired. Pujols clarified that the Estrellas have not received official notification from the LIDOM confirming the signing of the veteran player with a foreign organization, so his services remain available to local franchises.

“The Stars’ interest in Robinson Canó is real and we are still doing everything possible for him to continue with us,” Pujols said.

Pujols described the offer presented as a competitive proposal to keep the team’s former captain. Canó has developed his entire winter career in the Dominican Republic with the Estrellas, a team he has belonged to since the 2001-2002 season. In addition, since the 2023-2024 campaign, he assumed the role of captain of the petromacorisano team.
