Tuchel expresses his disappointment at the fans’ reaction to Ben White

Coach Thomas Tuchel expressed his “disappointment” at the boos from English fans towards Ben White during the 1-1 draw against Uruguay. Despite this, the strategist insisted that the Arsenal defender should “take it easy”. White, who made his first appearance in four years as a substitute in the 69th minute, was greeted with boos by a portion of the 80,581 attendees at the stadium. The 28-year-old player scored his first international goal, putting England ahead, but was booed again before conceding a penalty in stoppage time for a foul on Federico Viñas, which Federico Valverde converted. White left the 2022 World Cup in Qatar prematurely for what the Football Association described at the time as “personal reasons”, although multiple media outlets reported that it was a disagreement with the coaching staff of then-coach Gareth Southgate.

I was told he was booed. I didn’t hear it on the field because I was involved in the changes and instructions.

The coach added that the player should take it easy, and that the coaching staff will protect him. In addition, he hopes that this episode can be left behind so that White can “write new chapters”. Noni Madueke and Phil Foden left the match prematurely due to injuries. Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte also appeared to receive two yellow cards, but avoided a red card, although it was later confirmed that the first of those yellow cards was actually for defender José María Giménez.

I think it was not a good performance at all by the referee throughout the match.

The coach also questioned the lack of review of a hard tackle on Foden and considered the penalty awarded “very, very soft”.
