SAN FRANCISCO – The 2026 season for the San Francisco Giants could mark a historic milestone. Heliot Ramos, Puerto Rican outfielder, is shaping up to be the starter in left field on Opening Day, a situation not seen since the Barry Bonds era.
This fact could end a curious streak for the franchise.
The Giants have had 19 different left fielders as starters on Opening Day in a row. This mark equals the record set by the Carmelites/Orioles between 1937 and 1955 as the longest in the Major Leagues since 1900 without repeating a player in the same position.
Manager Tony Vitello confirmed that Ramos will be in left field for the opening game against the New York Yankees. This would break the long chain of changes in that position and provide stability since 2007, when Barry Bonds was the starter.
After Bonds’ departure, several players occupied left field on Opening Day, including Hunter Pence, Ángel Pagán, Joc Pederson, and Michael Conforto, until Ramos took over the position in 2025.
The signing of Ramos would represent a significant change for the Giants, who are starting a new era under the direction of Vitello, who will debut as a manager in the Major Leagues this season.
The opening game between the Giants and the Yankees will be played at Oracle Park in San Francisco. It will also mark the first live broadcast of a Major League Baseball game via Netflix.
The matchup will feature a pitching duel between Max Fried, a Yankees lefty, and Logan Webb, a Giants right-hander. Webb will be making his fifth consecutive Opening Day start, approaching Juan Marichal’s franchise record.
In addition to the sporting aspect, the game will be historic due to the implementation of the automated ball-strike review (ABS) system in the regular season, a technology tested in minor leagues and spring training.
The 2026 Major League season will officially begin with this Opening Night.
