Nagua – Celine López Hernández, at just 19 years old, is making history in local sports. The young woman, a resident of Proyecto Los Agrónomos and a member of the Chichi Vásquez Boxing Club, has become the first woman from Nagua to qualify for the Copa Independencia de Boxeo, a renowned international tournament that will take place in Santiago de los Caballeros from February 16 to 22. The athlete, who began training in 2024, quickly demonstrated her talent and discipline by winning silver medals in two national women’s tournaments. Celine, a Clinical Psychology student at the Open University for Adults (UAPA), combines her studies with two hours of daily training. In addition, she leads a team of 15 young people passionate about boxing as captain. Coming from a middle-class family, Celine has had the unconditional support of her mother, who helps her with transportation expenses for her competitions. Her coach, Aníbal Ozoria, has also been fundamental in her training, although both recognize that the support of the authorities has been limited. Despite this, the young woman persists in the pursuit of her dreams, driven by her determination and courage.
The boxer also revealed her greatest desire: to represent the Dominican Republic in the Olympic Games, a dream that motivates her to train with dedication. For his part, coach Aníbal Ozoria urged the authorities and the community to provide more support to this emerging talent, highlighting his dedication and perseverance as a source of pride for the entire María Trinidad Sánchez province. Celine López’s ranking is not only an achievement for the sport of Nagua, but also serves as an inspiration for more women to conquer spaces in traditionally male disciplines. Her story is an example of perseverance, discipline and passion for dreams, demonstrating that willpower can open paths to greatness, even with limited resources.I am proud to represent my province in this international competition. I urge young people to believe in themselves and to fight for their goals through sports.
