Angel City FC Shows Solidarity with Immigrants

Angel City FC, the NWSL team based in Los Angeles, distributed jerseys to its fans on Saturday with the slogan “Immigrant City Football Club”. Team members and coaching staff also wore the shirts before their Saturday night match against the North Carolina Courage, in a show of solidarity with the city’s immigrants who have been the target of attention from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. On the back of the t-shirts, “Los Angeles is for everyone” could be read in English and Spanish. The team reported that about 10,000 t-shirts were distributed. Protests against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies erupted in Los Angeles a week ago. Members of the National Guard and Marine troops have been sent to the city and dozens of similar protests have occurred across the country. Last week, Angel City issued a statement on social media addressing the protests. We are dismayed by the fear and uncertainty that many in our Los Angeles community are feeling at this moment. At Angel City, we believe in the power of belonging. We know that our city is stronger thanks to its diversity and the people and families who make it up, love it, and consider it their home. The players’ unions of the NWSL and WNBA also expressed their solidarity with the families “facing fear, hardship, and uncertainty related to immigration.”

We support all people seeking safety, dignity, and opportunity, no matter where they come from or where they hope to go. Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. We know that not all situations are simple. But offering compassion should never be up for debate.
