Dominican Republic Ties with U.S., but Misses Out on U-17 World Cup

SANTO DOMINGO – The Dominican Republic’s U-17 National Team delivered an outstanding performance by drawing 1-1 against the United States this Tuesday. The match, corresponding to the third and final day of Group E of the Concacaf U-17 Qualifiers 2026, ended with a bittersweet taste, as the result was not enough to secure a place in this year’s U-17 World Cup. The Dominican team dominated the match, displaying a constant offensive game against an American team that focused on defending and taking advantage of opportunities. The United States took the lead in the score at 41 minutes thanks to a header from Malik Jakupovic, who capitalized on a cross from the left. The Dominican Republic’s response was immediate. Adrián García equalized the score at 44 minutes, demonstrating his skill and determination on the field. In the second half, the game’s dynamics didn’t change. Those led by coach Edward “Beba” Acevedo maintained their intensity, seeking to overcome their rival. The high temperature and the pace of the match took their toll, forcing the coaching staff to make substitutions. Kamil Castillo, exhausted and with cramps, was one of the first to leave the field at 61 minutes. At 78 minutes, a foul by Astin Mbaye on José Mejía resulted in a red card for the American defender, leaving his team with one less player. Adrián García tried to put his team ahead with a powerful free kick, but the rival goalkeeper managed to stop the shot. In the final minutes, the Dominican Republic national team desperately sought the winning goal, generating several opportunities, including a deflected header by Junior Arias and another by Jarol Ramos that lacked power.

The United States managed to maintain the tie, securing their qualification to the U-17 World Cup by finishing first in Group E on goal difference. Both teams accumulated 7 points, but the United States had a goal difference of 18 (19 GF and 1 GC) against 15 (16 GF and 1 GC) for the Dominican Republic.
