Miami – The Miami Marlins have reached a trade agreement with the Chicago Cubs, a move that will send right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera to the Chicago organization. In return, the Marlins will receive a package of prospects led by outfielder Owen Caissie.

Sources reported that the agreement includes Caissie, considered the Cubs’ top prospect and number 47 in baseball according to MLB Pipeline, along with Dominican infielders Cristian Hernández and Edgardo de León.

The agreement has not yet been officially confirmed by either team.

Cabrera is in his first year of salary arbitration eligibility and will be under contractual control of the team that acquires him until the end of the 2028 season.

The Dominican right-hander, who will turn 28 in 2026, signed with the Marlins as part of the 2015 international class. Throughout his early campaigns in the Major Leagues, he showed notable potential, although his development as a starter was affected by control issues and injuries, including blisters and discomfort in his throwing elbow.

Between 2021 and 2024, Cabrera accumulated 4.3 bWAR, with EFE+ of 102, WHIP of 1.347, 5.1 walks and 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings, in 63 appearances, 61 of them as a starter. In the 2023 season, he was sent to Triple-A and did not participate in the National League Wild Card Series due to his control problems.

His performance improved in 2025, recording his best numbers: 26 starts, 137.2 innings pitched, 150 strikeouts, 3.1 walks per nine innings, and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.13. He finished the campaign with an ERA+ of 125 and completed at least seven innings in four starts.

Between May 4 and August 8, Cabrera maintained an ERA of 2.22, the third-best in the National League and the fourth-best in all of Major League Baseball during that period.

However, the season also included health issues. He left an opening on July 11 due to discomfort in his right elbow, and subsequently left his August 30 start early due to a sprain in the same elbow, before returning to make two starts down the stretch, including the team’s final one, in which he pitched five scoreless innings.
