Million-Dollar Economic Impact: 2025 Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana Finals

The finals of the Libertadores and Sudamericana Cups held in 2025 in Lima and Asunción generated a significant economic impact for Peru and Paraguay, reaching 110 million dollars, according to Alejandro Domínguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol).

The leader highlighted that the organization of these events goes beyond sports, pointing out the economic and tourist benefits received by the host venues.

The final of the Copa Sudamericana, played on November 22 at the Defensores del Chaco stadium in Asunción, saw Lanús crowned champion after defeating Atlético Mineiro on penalties (5-4). The National Directorate of Migrations of Paraguay reported the entry of 24,023 visitors to the country for this event. A week later, Flamengo won its fourth Copa Libertadores by defeating Palmeiras 1-0 at the Monumental stadium in Lima. This triumph generated the Brazilian club revenues exceeding 33 million dollars, consolidating itself as the institution with the highest earnings continentally in 2025. Conmebol revealed that in 2025, US$209,090,000 was distributed in prizes for the Copa Libertadores and US$78,775,000 for the Sudamericana. These figures represent the highest in the history of both tournaments and an increase of nearly 400% compared to the previous decade. Last December, Domínguez highlighted that the constant increase in revenue strengthens South American football. “Resources improve, competitiveness increases, and a continuous growth cycle is generated with a very favorable trend for the region’s football,” he stated.
