Sam Coffey Secures Her Future with the Portland Thorns Through 2027

The talented American midfielder, Sam Coffey, has signed a contract extension with the Portland Thorns, ensuring her stay at the NWSL club until the 2027 season. The contract extension, which was finalized in March 2024, was kept secret by both the player and the team at the time. This new agreement extends Coffey’s contract, whose previous agreement, signed in November 2022, was scheduled to expire at the end of this season. The Thorns captain is now tied to the Portland team until 2027, a year that includes the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Originally from New York City, Coffey is in her fourth season with the Thorns and has established herself as a key player for both the club and the national team. She has played in 93 league and cup matches with the Thorns, scoring four goals. In addition, she was part of the Portland team that won the NWSL Championship in 2022. Coffey was also included in the NWSL Best XI in 2022 and 2023. She was a finalist for the NWSL Rookie of the Year award, although the award ultimately went to her international teammate. Internationally, Coffey has become a force in the heart of the American midfield, as well as a leader. She has played 34 matches with the USWNT and scored two goals, the most recent in the 3-0 victory over China on May 31. She also played a vital role in the Americans’ run to the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games, participating in all but one match, when she was suspended for accumulation of yellow cards.
