Mike Borgonzi Seeks Ideal Leader for the Titans Without Biases of the Past
The Tennessee Titans’ general manager, Mike Borgonzi, is in search of the team’s next head coach. Despite his 16 years of experience in scouting and personnel roles with the Kansas City Chiefs, Borgonzi assures that he will not allow his previous experiences to influence his decision. Among the candidates to be interviewed are Steve Spagnuolo, defensive coordinator of the Chiefs, and Matt Nagy, offensive coordinator. Borgonzi witnessed the three Super Bowls won by the Chiefs with Spagnuolo leading the defense and two with Nagy as offensive coordinator. The Titans fired Brian Callahan in October and named Mike McCoy, the lead offensive assistant, as interim head coach. McCoy is being interviewed for the head coaching position. To identify candidates, the organization formed a committee composed of Borgonzi, the president of American football operations Chad Brinker, assistant general manager Dave Ziegler, vice president and football advisor Reggie McKenzie, and director of player personnel Jon Salge. Borgonzi emphasized the importance of finding a leader with a clear vision and who is not afraid of conflict when demanding accountability. Although it would be natural to seek to replicate the Chiefs’ model, where Borgonzi played an important role in their success, his goal is to establish his own plan for the Titans. You have to eliminate that part, that biased opinion about anyone you may have a relationship with. You must make the best decision for the organization, and that is the conclusion. Who will be the best leader and coach for this organization?
Mike Borgonzi
I’m looking to create the model for the Tennessee Titans with the people we have here. I’ve taken certain things about how we evaluate players and how we work with coaches during that process, and how we do certain things. But this is our team here, and the people we have. So, certainly, I’ve learned and benefited from many things in the past, but I think we have a group here that has been in different places, and we want to make it our own.
