Vince McMahon Involved in High-Speed Car Accident in Connecticut

A recently released police video reveals details of the high-speed car accident involving former WWE CEO Vince McMahon, which occurred last summer in Connecticut. The footage shows a state police officer attempting to stop him at the time of the incident. McMahon, now 80 years old, was driving his 2024 Bentley Continental GT on July 24 on the Merritt Parkway in Westport. State police reported that the vehicle, valued at over $300,000, was traveling at 100 mph (160 kph) or more.

“Why were you driving over 100 mph?” asked State Police Detective Maxwell Robins to McMahon after the crash, according to the police body camera video.

In response, McMahon stated that he was going to his granddaughter’s birthday party. The dashcam video from Robins shows McMahon approaching a BMW in the same lane, braking and swerving into the left lane at the last second. The Bentley hit the rear of the other car before crashing into the left lane guardrail and bouncing across the highway, creating a cloud of dirt and vehicle parts. According to the police, no one was seriously injured in the accident. In addition to the damage to the rear of the BMW, another vehicle traveling on the opposite side of the highway was hit by flying debris. McMahon was cited for reckless driving and for not maintaining a safe distance. In October, a state judge allowed McMahon to enter a pre-trial probation program, which will result in the charges being removed from his record next October if he successfully completes the program. He was also ordered to make a charitable contribution of $1,000. State police said Robins was trying to catch up to McMahon on the highway and record his speed before stopping him. They said the incident was not a pursuit, which occurs when police chase someone trying to flee from officers. They stated that it did not appear McMahon was trying to escape the officer.

“I’m trying to reach you and you keep moving away,” Robins told McMahon in a video recorded by police body cameras on the side of the highway.

McMahon responded: “No, no, no. I’m not trying to escape.” When Robins asked him why McMahon didn’t change lanes earlier to avoid the accident, McMahon denied looking at his phone and added that he hadn’t driven his car in a long time. The video also showed McMahon talking to the driver whose car crashed from behind. Barbara Doran, from New York City, said that McMahon expressed his concern to her and was glad she was okay. After McMahon received the traffic citation, he shook hands with Robins and another officer and wished them well. McMahon resigned as WWE CEO in 2022 amid a company investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct. He also resigned as executive chairman of the board of directors of TKO Group Holdings, WWE’s parent company, in 2024, one day after a former WWE employee filed a lawsuit against him for sexual abuse. McMahon has denied the allegations. The lawsuit is still pending. McMahon bought what was then the World Wrestling Federation in 1982 and transformed it from a regional wrestling company into a global phenomenon. In addition to running the company with his wife, Linda, who is now the United States Secretary of Education, he also performed at WWE events as himself.
