WNBA Proposal Includes Salary Increase and Revenue Sharing

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) has presented a new collective bargaining proposal that promises significant changes in the salary structure and revenue sharing, according to sources close to the negotiations. The proposal, which was discussed in recent meetings, contemplates a maximum salary exceeding 1.1 million dollars, available to multiple players per team, with annual increases. In addition, a minimum salary of more than 220,000 dollars and an average salary exceeding 460,000 dollars are established. These salary increases would come into effect in the first year of the agreement for more than 180 players, and are expected to increase over the duration of the collective bargaining agreement. The current collective bargaining agreement was scheduled to expire on October 31st, but the WNBA and the players’ union agreed to extend negotiations until November 30th, with the goal of reaching an agreement that benefits the players in terms of compensation. Last year, the players exercised their right to terminate the current collective bargaining agreement, seeking, among other things, a greater distribution of revenue, higher salaries, better benefits, and a more flexible salary cap. When the last collective agreement expired in 2019, both parties agreed to a 60-day extension, with an agreement that was finally ratified in January 2020.
