WNBA Strengthens Security After On-Court Incidents
The WNBA has announced strong measures following two incidents in which objects were thrown onto the court during recent games. The league has confirmed that the person who threw an inappropriate object at an Atlanta Dream game has already been arrested. The first incident occurred during the Dream’s match against the Golden State Valkyries. Subsequently, a similar incident took place in Chicago, where another object was thrown onto the court during the match between the Valkyries and the Sky. The WNBA has stated that anyone who throws objects onto the court will be ejected from the arena and face a minimum ban of one year.Sky player Elizabeth Williams expressed her discontent after Friday’s game. The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or into the seating area can pose a risk to the safety of players, game officials, and fans.
WNBA Statement
Isabelle Harrison, a player for the New York Liberty, also spoke out about the situation on social media: ARENA SECURITY?! Hello??! Please, improve. It’s not funny. It was never funny. Throwing ANYTHING onto the court is very dangerous. WNBA arenas have security procedures, many with no-bag policies or allowing clear bags of limited size. All bags are subject to search upon entering the arena. It’s super disrespectful. I really don’t understand the point. It’s really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up.
