Breanna Stewart Ready to Return with the Liberty
The two-time WNBA MVP, Breanna Stewart, is set to return to action with the New York Liberty this Monday, after missing the last month due to a bone bruise in her right knee.
The Liberty confirmed Stewart’s availability for Monday’s game against the Connecticut Sun. Sabrina Ionescu, who missed a game due to a foot injury suffered on Thursday against the Chicago Sky, was also cleared.
The last time Stewart played was July 26, when he had to leave the game early due to injury. Without Stewart, the current champions lost that game and the next three, accumulating a record of 5-8. This led the Liberty to drop to fifth place in the standings, with a record of 22-15 and seven games remaining in the regular season.
In his third season in Brooklyn, Stewart, a seven-time All-Star, has averaged 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game.
The game on Monday will also mark the first time Stewart and mid-season acquisition Emma Meesseman will play together. Before Meesseman’s arrival, and with their full roster, the Liberty looked poised to defend their title, starting with an impressive 9-0 before injuries began to pile up.
Natasha Cloud (nose) and Isabelle Harrison (return to play protocol after a concussion) are questionable for Monday’s game.
The Liberty are looking to become the fourth WNBA franchise to repeat as champions when the playoffs begin next month.
