Basketball at Los Angeles 2028: The Tournament Will Start Before the Opening Ceremony

The excitement of basketball at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will begin two days before the opening ceremony, organizers confirmed this Wednesday. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the world governing body for this sport, announced that the basketball schedule for Los Angeles has been revised. The matches will begin on July 12, 2028, ahead of the opening ceremony scheduled for July 14. It has not yet been specified whether the men’s tournament, the women’s tournament, or both, will begin before the official opening. A preliminary schedule published last month suggests that there will be three basketball games on July 12 and three more on July 13.

This adjustment allows the quarter-finals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no match starts before noon, improving the experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters.

The bronze medal matches will be played on July 28 and 29, while the gold medal finals will take place on July 29 and 30, the latter being the closing day of the Games. In addition to basketball, other sports are also scheduled to start their competitions before the opening ceremony, including field hockey, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, cricket, and soccer. The canoe slalom competition in Oklahoma City is expected to begin on the morning of July 14, hours before the opening ceremony which will be held about 1,931 km away. The United States is the current Olympic basketball champion in both the men’s and women’s categories. The women have won eight consecutive gold medals, while the men have five.
