Valkyries Coach Calls for Fair Play After Loss to Lynx

Golden State Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase raised her voice after her team’s 101-72 loss to the Minnesota Lynx in the first game of the playoff series. Nakase asked league officials that the team have a “fair fight” and “fair play”. The Valkyries led the first quarter 28-21, thanks to a solid defense and good shooting accuracy. However, the Lynx, the team with the best WNBA record, reacted and dominated the rest of the game.

“I want a fair fight. I really do. I want a clean game, but I love the fact that both teams are playing with heart. They are fighting. But I would like it to be fair.”

Nakase argued that the arbitration affected her team’s momentum, especially when Iliana Rupert received fouls on rebound plays. The coach also pointed out that the Lynx, being the best team in the league, do not need refereeing help. The Lynx finished the game with 23 team fouls and 24 free throws, while the Valkyries accumulated 22 fouls and 27 free throws. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve mentioned that there was a change in officiating at halftime, but that it was not a determining factor in the outcome of the game. Natisha Hiedeman, from the Lynx, scored 18 points, a career high. Napheesa Collier contributed 20 points and six rebounds. Golden State, one of the best defensive teams in the WNBA, had a good start in three-point shots, but then decreased its effectiveness. Before the second match in San José, Nakase’s statements could be reviewed by the league. The coach stated that her main concern is the mental and physical well-being of her players.
