Mystics in Conversations to Negotiate for Aaliyah Edwards
The Washington Mystics are in trade conversations to explore the future of second-year forward Aaliyah Edwards, according to sources close to the situation.
Several teams have contacted the Mystics to express their interest in Edwards, and the franchise is listening to offers.
Edwards, selected sixth in the 2024 WNBA draft, has seen her minutes decrease this season, after having a more important role on the team last year. The forward is in a crowded offensive zone, which also includes young stars Kiki Iriafen and Shakira Austin, as well as veteran Stefanie Dolson.
In her rookie season, Edwards averaged 7.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in 21.8 minutes per game, starting in 17 of the 34 games for the Mystics, who suffered several injuries. In her second year, she averages 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in 14.1 minutes per game, coming off the bench.
Edwards, a former UConn All-American and two-time Olympian with the Canadian national team, missed the Mystics’ first four regular season games due to a lower back contusion sustained during training camp.
Washington is in the midst of a new era, with a new management and coaching staff that joined this offseason. A third of the way through the 2025 campaign, the Mystics have exceeded preseason expectations, with an 8-9 record, 0.5 games out of a playoff spot, largely due to the success of their lottery-picked rookie duo, Iriafen and Sonia Citron.
Edwards could be an attractive acquisition for a team as a young player with great potential who will still be under a rookie scale contract next year, when most league veterans will reach free agency in anticipation of a new collective bargaining agreement.
The WNBA trade deadline is August 7th.
