Mystics in Negotiations for a Possible Aaliyah Edwards Trade

The Washington Mystics are exploring the possibility of trading second-year forward Aaliyah Edwards, according to sources close to the situation. Several teams have contacted the Mystics to express their interest in Edwards, and Washington is considering these calls. Edwards, selected in the sixth position of the WNBA draft in 2024, has seen her minutes decrease this season, after having a more relevant role on the team last year. The Mystics have a crowded frontcourt, which also includes young stars like Kiki Iriafen and Shakira Austin, in addition to veteran Stefanie Dolson. In her rookie season, Edwards averaged 7.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in 21.8 minutes per game, starting in 17 of 34 games for the Mystics, who suffered several injuries. In her second year, she averages 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in 14.1 minutes per game, coming off the bench. Edwards, a former UConn All-American and two-time Olympian with the Canadian national team, missed the first four games of the Mystics’ regular season due to a lower back contusion suffered during training camp. Washington is in the midst of a new phase, with the arrival of a new general manager and coaching staff in the offseason. One-third of the way through the 2025 season, the Mystics have exceeded previous expectations, with an 8-9 record, 0.5 games out of a playoff spot, thanks in large part to the success of their rookies Iriafen and Sonia Citron. Edwards could be an attractive acquisition for a team, being a young player with great potential and who will still be under a rookie contract next year, when most of the league’s veterans will become free agents, in anticipation of a new collective bargaining agreement. The deadline for trades in the WNBA is August 7th.
