The outstanding player Emma Meesseman, recognized as the MVP of the WNBA Finals in 2019, has confirmed her addition to the current league champions, the New York Liberty, as announced by general manager Jonathan Kolb. Meesseman’s arrival in New York is subject to the duration of the visa application process, Kolb explained.

It’s too early to say right now, we’re going to try to do it as quickly as possible.

The Belgian power forward, standing at 6 feet 4 inches, has proven to be a key player in the league. In 2022, she averaged 12.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game with the Chicago Sky, being a two-time WNBA All-Star. Previously, she played seven seasons with the Washington Mystics, a team she led to the championship in 2019, where she also became the first substitute to win the Finals MVP award. Meesseman, who participated in the EuroBasket this summer with Belgium, also considered joining the Minnesota Lynx and the Phoenix Mercury. His impressive international career includes two All-Star Five Olympic team selections (in Tokyo and Paris), two EuroBasket MVP awards, and three consecutive EuroLeague MVP nominations. With the arrival of Meesseman, the Liberty further strengthen their roster, seeking to become the fourth WNBA franchise, and the second in the last 20 years, to repeat the title. The team already has figures of the stature of Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones, who is expected to return this week after an ankle injury that has kept her out for much of the season. On Monday, New York also signed Australian power forward Stephanie Talbot, who was released by the Golden State Valkyries last week.
