Liberty Tie WNBA Record for Three-Pointers in a Blowout Victory
The New York Liberty tied their own WNBA record by making 19 three-pointers in a dominant 100-52 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.
The margin of victory was the second largest in league history, falling short of the 59-point record set by Minnesota in 2017. However, it did set a new franchise record, surpassing a 43-point victory over Washington in 1998.
Sabrina Ionescu led the New York with 18 points, while Jonquel Jones added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Breanna Stewart and Leonie Fiebich also contributed with 13 points each. The four key players rested for almost the entire last quarter.
The Liberty finished with 19 of 32 three-point attempts, led by Ionescu, who made four of her six shots from long distance.
With this victory, New York improved its record to 7-0 for the first time since the 1997 season.
The team had also made 19 three-pointers against Chicago on May 22, breaking the previous league record. The Liberty came close to surpassing that mark in the first three quarters, making 18 three-pointers in the first 30 minutes, but cooled down in the final quarter, making only one.
The Liberty closed an intense week by winning their fourth game in six days. They will now have a short break before their next game in Washington on Thursday.Sunday’s game was the first of the three-week Commissioner’s Cup season tournament. New York reached the final last year before losing to Minnesota. The Liberty got their revenge by winning the WNBA championship.
New York took the lead from the start against Connecticut, building a 31-13 advantage after the first quarter, with Stewart, Ionescu, Fiebich, and Jones combining to score all the points. The Liberty maintained the pace in the second quarter, extending the lead to 60-28 at halftime. New York hit 68% of their field goals in the first half, including 12 three-pointers. The Liberty didn’t slow down in the third quarter and the points kept adding up on the scoreboard.Despite having a 50-point lead, New York challenged a foul committed by Ionescu on a 3-point shot by Marina Mabrey. New York won the challenge, and the star ran onto the court, excited, and high-fived the Liberty staff for challenging the call.
Tina Charles and Jacy Sheldon led Connecticut (1-6) with 10 points each.
