Breanna Stewart Suffers Knee Injury

New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart is suffering from a bone bruise in her right knee, according to team coach Sandy Brondello, this Wednesday before the current WNBA champions lost 100-93 against the Minnesota Lynx. Brondello did not provide a defined timeframe for Stewart’s return to the court.

We want to be cautious. If we can get her back by the end of August, I think that would be great. It’s a matter of perspective… so when she’s ready. But we have to keep her fresh for the playoffs. I know she’ll be back sooner. When she’ll be back before the end of the regular season, I don’t know.

Stewart was injured at the beginning of the Liberty’s 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday. She missed Monday’s game, where they fell 92-82 against Dallas. Stewart, a two-time WNBA MVP, who will turn 31 on August 27, averages 20.6 points and 8.5 rebounds in her nine career seasons. She was the first pick in 2016, after winning four national championships at UConn, Stewart won two WNBA titles with the Seattle Storm before joining the Liberty in 2023. She missed the entire 2019 season due to an Achilles tendon injury. This season, Stewart is averaging 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds. She had played in every Liberty game in 2025 before Saturday’s injury. She was sidelined shortly after teammate Jonquel Jones returned to the Liberty lineup last week. Jones has missed 12 games this season due to injuries. New York has been dealing with several injuries throughout the season, but remains in second place in the WNBA with a 17-8 record, behind Minnesota (22-5). Wednesday’s game was the first of four regular season meetings between the Lynx and the Liberty, who faced off in a five-game WNBA Finals series last year.
