Kelsey Mitchell Reveals Details About Her Medical Condition

Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell shared details about the medical condition that left her unable to move her legs during Tuesday night’s WNBA semifinal game. The incident occurred in the third quarter of the game against the Las Vegas Aces, which resulted in a 107-98 overtime loss. This victory secured the Aces their third WNBA Finals appearance in four years, eliminating the Fever after a standout playoff performance. The player, Aliyah Boston, received her fifth foul while setting a screen as Mitchell was heading towards the basket. Mitchell fell to the ground, and players and coaches gathered around, using towels to protect her privacy. Although a stretcher was prepared, Mitchell managed to stand up and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

I suffered from something called rhabdomyolysis last night. My muscles stopped working and reached their maximum capacity. I entered a sensation of numbness/paralysis without movement in my lower extremities for about 5 to 7 seconds.

Mitchell expressed that she felt panic thinking the worst and thanked God for his protection. She also thanked the coaches and doctors who attended her in the arena and in the hospital. The 29-year-old player, former Ohio State star, was key in Indiana’s outstanding season. After her third All-Star Game appearance, she led the team in scoring during the regular season, averaging 20.2 points. In the postseason, she averaged 22.3 points in 32.6 minutes in eight games. The Fever played without four key players, including Caitlin Clark, due to season-ending injuries. Despite the adversities, Indiana, led by Mitchell, won its first playoff series in a decade, overcoming a 1-0 deficit in the first round against Atlanta. The Fever took the Aces, the second seed, to a decisive fifth game and overtime, despite Boston’s fouls and Mitchell’s cramps.

I literally played until my wheels fell off. THANK YOU for the prayers, love, respect, and support throughout this.
