Indiana Fever Suffers Defeat and New Injuries

The Indiana Fever faced a tough night on Friday, falling to an 0-2 record without their star, Caitlin Clark, and adding new injuries to their already complicated situation. In a game against the Connecticut Sun, which ended with a score of 85-83, the Fever saw two of their key players leave the game due to injury.

Sydney Colson, Clark’s substitute, suffered a left leg injury during the first quarter. Sophie Cunningham, who had taken on point guard responsibilities, appeared to aggravate a right ankle injury that had kept her out of the first two games of the season.

Both players were removed from the game and did not return. Fever coach Stephanie White was unable to provide updates on their status after the match.

It was like a punch in the gut. It affected us in the second quarter, no doubt, not having another primary ball handler, and we have to take Sophie out of what she naturally does very well when she has to become a ball handler.

Cunningham had scored 10 points, his season high, before leaving the game. The loss adds to the one suffered on Wednesday against the Washington Mystics, with a score of 83-77, two days after it was announced that Clark would be out for at least two weeks due to a left quadriceps injury.

Despite the adversity, the Fever managed to overcome a 15-point deficit, taking the lead twice in the last three and a half minutes of the game. They had the opportunity to tie or win with 5.1 seconds remaining, but Kelsey Mitchell’s shot didn’t go in.

Aliyah Boston led the Fever with 17 points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds. Marina Mabrey, from Connecticut, scored 26 points.

This victory represented the first triumph for the Sun’s new coach, Rachid Meziane, and the franchise’s 500th regular season win.

The Indiana team, which started the season with 11 players, finished the game with only eight on the court. If Colson and Cunningham can’t play on Tuesday against Washington, the Fever could sign players to 7-day contracts as temporary replacements.

It’s hard when you keep losing people and you have to keep putting it together.
