Sophie Cunningham Out for the Rest of the Season

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham will not play any further in the 2025 WNBA season due to a medial collateral ligament (MCL) tear in her right knee, the team announced on Tuesday.

The injury occurred during Sunday’s game against the Connecticut Sun.

Cunningham becomes the third Fever guard to miss the rest of the season due to injury in the last two weeks. Aari McDonald (foot fracture) and Sydney Colson (ACL tear) are also out after getting injured in the same game on August 7, while Caitlin Clark (right groin) remains out indefinitely, as she has been for the last month.

The Fever also reported that they have signed guard Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract and have released guard Kyra Lambert. In her first season in Indiana, after being traded from Phoenix, Cunningham is averaging 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, with 13 starts. The team indicated that she is expected to make a full recovery from the injury.

Indiana (19-16) is currently in sixth place in the standings and is trying to maintain its position heading into the playoffs, less than a month before the postseason begins. The top eight teams in the league advance to the playoffs.

Before Sunday’s game, coach Stephanie White was asked if the team expects Clark to return before the regular season ends, to which she replied: “That’s the hope. The hope is that she’ll be back.”
