Sophie Cunningham Out Due to Injury for the Indiana Fever

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season due to a medial collateral ligament (MCL) tear in her right knee, the team announced Tuesday.

Cunningham suffered the injury during Sunday’s game against the Connecticut Sun.

This is the Fever’s third guard to suffer an injury that will sideline her for the season in the last two weeks. Aari McDonald (foot fracture) and Sydney Colson (ACL tear) will also miss the rest of the year after being injured in the same game on August 7. Caitlin Clark (right groin) remains out indefinitely, as she has been for the past month.

The Fever also announced that they signed guard Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract and released guard Kyra Lambert. In her first season in Indiana, after being traded from Phoenix, Cunningham is averaging 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds, with 13 starts. She is expected to make a full recovery from the injury, according to the team.

Indiana (19-16) is sixth in the standings and is looking to maintain its playoff position less than a month before the start of the postseason. The top eight teams in the league standings advance to the playoffs.

Before Sunday’s game, coach Stephanie White was asked if the team expects Clark to return before the end of the regular season, to which she replied: “That’s the hope. The hope is that she returns.”
